Ionic liquids can be developed for any type of application, their chemical and physical properties being determined by the number of ions. Unlike traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids are neither volatile nor combustible and many of them, as far as we know today, are non-toxic. For Merck’s research scientists, close cooperation with experts from the Center for Environmental Research and Technology at the University of Bremen is an important aspect of their work. The research scientists at this center are able to characterize the hazard potentials of various ionic liquids.

They are highly suitable as solvents for organic syntheses, for catalytic applications and for extractions.
